Conclusion

Both scholars and activists stress the importance of various kinds of external resources for the emergence, development, and success of social movements. Scholars have developed a fairly exhaustive accounting of the financial, physical, and human resources that have proven significant in past mobilizations. This accounting can provide a checklist of sorts for activists wanting to know “what it takes” to get movements “off the ground.”

Activists, however, make their unique contribution to this discussion as they assert the importance of cultural resources interactively constructed in pre-existing organizations and through the many conversations and actions that take place in those organizations. In making this contribution, they also implicitly argue that the distinction that scholars make between the resources necessary to create movements and the resources necessary to build individual support and commitment to movements is overblown. They assert their ability to do both simultaneously.
